After Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) decision to provide organic waste to villages around the city located up to 10 km,the standing committee on Tuesday decided to extend the limits up to 75 km.
During the recent agitation by Urali Devachi and Phursungi villagers, some garbage had been provided to farmers. Now,the civic administration has decided to provide garbage regularly to farms up to 75 km distance.
“As part of the measures to tackle the garbage predicament, the PMC has decided to provide wet garbage to the farmers within a distance of 75 km. This will be provided free of cost as per their demand,” said Nilesh Nikam, chairman of the civic standing committee on Tuesday.
At present, hotels and restaurants generate 175 tonnes of organic waste, which is collected in green biodegradable bags. But once dumped at the depot,it mixes with the rest of the garbage, which contains plastics, and the entire effort becomes an exercise in futility.
