A police officer attached to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Pimpri Chinchwad police was suspended from service Wednesday after he was booked in an alleged financial fraud offence.
While no arrest has been made yet in this case, a prima facie probe has revealed that sub-inspector Pramod Chintamani and other accused have cheated people to the tune of Rs 93 lakh.
Santosh Tarate, 43, a resident of Rahatani, lodged the First Information report (FIR) in this case at the Bhosari police station, against sub-inspector Pramod Chintamani, an auto rickshaw driver, Goraksh Med of Sangvi, and a real estate agent, Sandip Ahir of Bhosari.
Tarate initially filed a complaint at the Bhosari police station on November 12, alleging that Chintamani had persuaded him to invest money, promising to return double the amount within 20 months.
The police said Tarate had been giving Rs 18 lakh to Chintamani since 2023, hoping to get Rs 36 lakh in return, but Chintamani had allegedly returned Rs 15.4 lakh so far.
The police probe into Tarate’s complaint has also revealed that Chintamani cheated at least six more people similarly.
An offence was lodged against Tarate and two others at the Bhosari police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 316(2), 318(4), 336(2), 338, 336(3), 3(5) this week.
Subsequently, Chintamani was suspended from service, and a probe was launched into the financial fraud case against him.
