A 43-year-old murder convict lodged in Pune’s Yerawada Open Prison allegedly attempted suicide Tuesday morning. The Yerawada police station has launched a probe into the incident.
Officials said the incident took place around 8.30 am Tuesday inside the premises of the Yerawada Open Prison, which is a minimum security facility where convicts who exhibit good behaviour during their sentences are lodged.

An officer from the Yerawada police station said the inmate was undergoing a life sentence after being convicted of murdering a woman in Pune in 2014.
“Prison staffers rushed him (the convict) to the hospital. He is currently receiving treatment. The initial probe suggests that he has been in an unstable state of mind. We have launched an investigation into the sequence of events leading to the incident,” the officer said.
Prison Officer Nisha Shreykar lodged an FIR in the case Tuesday evening.
