A man was allegedly beaten to death with hockey sticks by two men in Pune’s Chandan Nagar area early on Tuesday after he misbehaved with a woman who is related to one of them. Following an investigation, the police arrested the accused later in the day.
According to officers, the investigation revealed that it was one of the accused who had called them to inform that a man had been found dead.
The police identified the deceased as Sainath Dattatray Janrao, 35. The arrested accused, Aditya Santosh Walhekar alias Sonya, 21, and Karan Pappu Sharma alias Samarth, 21, are residents of Dr Ambedkar Vasahat Nagar, they added.
An officer from Chandan Nagar police station said they initially received a call about a dead body found in Dr Ambedkar Vasahat Nagar. “A team rushed to the spot. Based on initial observations, we thought that it was a case of a destitute person suffering an injury due to a fall. However, an autopsy held later revealed that the death was caused due to multiple injuries, indicating a murder,” the officer said.
“As we began investigating all possible angles, we found some contradictions in the statement given by Walhekar, who had called us about the body. As our team zeroed in on him, it soon became clear that he had brutally beaten Janrao to death along with an accomplice who was determined to be Sharma,” the officer added.
The probe indicated that Janrao, who was unemployed, had misbehaved with Walhekar’s aunt recently, causing the accused to beat him up brutally.
