Maharashtra: Two tourists drown in separate incidents at Kasarsai dam and Dhurnali waterfall

Both deceased were part of groups that were visiting these monsoon tourist destinations in the district

TWO YOUNG tourists drowned in separate incidents in Pune district on Sunday. A 19-year-old youth from Beed district drowned at Kasarsai dam reservoir in Mulshi taluka while a 21-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh drowned at Dhurnali waterfalls in Junnar. Both deceased were part of groups that were visiting these monsoon tourist destinations in the district.

The first incident took place around 11 am on Sunday in which Santosh Shahaji Raut (19), a resident of Kaij taluka in Beed drowned at Kasarsai dam during an outing with friends. Raut was part of a five member group of friends who had come to the dam in Mulshi. Some members of the group entered the waters when Raut drowned. The group members raised an alarm however Raut could not be located.

After the police were informed, they roped in rescue teams from Vanyajeev Rakshak Sanstha from Maval and Shivdurg Rescue Team from Lonavala. Raut’s body was recovered around 11 am on Monday.

The second incident took place around 4 pm on Sunday in which the tourist identified as Zahirali Saraju Ansari (21), a native of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh drowned in the lake of Dhurnali waterfall in Junnar. “Ansari worked at an automobile repair shop at Narayangaon in Pune district. He had come to Dhurnali waterfall with a group of friends. When he was standing on the edge of the lake, he slipped and fell. As he struggled to swim, Ansari drowned. His body was recovered later by some locals,” said an officer from Otur police station.
