Congress Working Committee member Shashi Tharoor on Monday said that if some information into the death of Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare during the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attack in the public domain has been pointed out by party leader Vijay Waddetiwar, then there should be a thorough inquiry into it to clear the air.

“It is worth investigating. There should be serious investigation into Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar’s claim that former Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare was not killed by terrorists during the 26/11 attack but by a police official close to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS),” Tharoor said in the city on Monday.

Waddetiwar had pointed out information published in a book written by former IGP S M Mushriff, which stated that bullets found in Hemant Karkare’s body could not have been fired by Ajmal Kasab and could be from a police revolver.

“It has been in the public domain for some time. If it’s not true then we will be happy, but it needs to be investigated to clear the air around it. The citizens of the country have the right to know what really happened,” Waddetiwar had said.

The Congress leader said that the then public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, contesting the Lok Sabha elections on a BJP ticket, had already propagated a myth that the terrorist was served biryani in jail. “We known that he had propagated an unjustified myth that the Pakistani terrorist was served biryani in prison and that is something that shows him in very poor light. If, indeed he has already revealed his political bias in that moment, then there is every reason to worry whether his political bias had influenced any other of his stands. We are not saying that the allegation is true. We are saying it should be investigated,” he added.

Wedditwar’s comment on Sunday that “Hemant Karkare was not killed by terrorists during the Mumbai attack, but by a police official to the RSS” had created controversy with the BJP protesting against it. However, he later issued a clarification saying that it was not he saying it but had been mentioned in the book authored by SM Mushrif.
