For the third time in two months, the Aurangabad
Bench of Bombay High Court has ordered the state
government to give college teachers who have not
taken NET/SET and joined between 1991 and 2000
all the benefits of Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) since the date of their joining. A compensation amount with a rate of 6 per cent interest on the arrears since the year they joined should also be given to the teachers, said members of the teachers union that had filed a writ petition in the court.
We welcome the courts decision. The government had said they would pay CAS benefit taking April 1,2013 as the starting date which is wrong. We had filed three writ petitions and all three got a favourable judgment on August 1,August 28 and September 13. The government will also have to pay a penalty of 6 per cent on the arrears that the teachers should have been eligible for since the date of their joining, said Shivaji Patil, president,Maharashtra Federation of College and University Teachers Organisation (MFUCTO).
Talking about the 6th Pay Commission arrears that the government had promised to pay the teachers,Patil said: It was supposed to be paid by July 31. Half of it has been paid. Another half has been sanctioned by the government but the money hasnt been deposited in the bank. We hope we will get the money soon.
Opposing privatisation of education and new pension policy of the government,Patil said,The all-India chapter of MFUCTO called IFUCTO is launching a protest march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament on September 20. The government has introduced contributory pension for teachers who joined after 2005. This is a national issue and we are opposing it. We want the government to adopt the old pension system again.
