Govt to probe if Sanjay Dutt was ‘served alcohol in jail’

Dutt had surrendered in a TADA court in May post the SCs final verdict on his role in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.

Home Minister R R Patil Wednesday announced that the state government would investigate allegations of actor Sanjay Dutt being provided alcohol in jail. Patil was responding to Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Vinod Tawade who alleged that Dutt was served alcoholic beverages at the Yerawada Jail.

Dutt had surrendered in a TADA court in Mumbai in May post the Supreme Court’s final verdict on his role in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. The court had handed over a sentence of six years in jail in 2007,which was later reduced to six years. The actor had served 18 months of his sentence and is now serving the remaining months.

Dutt has already enjoyed a 30-day parole in October and has been further granted a month’s leave in December. He is yet to leave the jail premises. Tawade had made this allegation during his speech at the Council. A senior jail officer said that no inquiry orders have reached Yerawada Jail yet.

“These allegations are untrue and we are ready to face any enquiry,” the officer said.
