GBS suspected deaths rise to five, case count up at 149

The count of suspected GBS deaths has now gone up to five and the total number of suspected cases is at 149. Three new cases were reported on Saturday. Of the 149 patients, a total of 124 have been diagnosed with GBS. 28 people are currently on ventilator support.

A 60-year-old man, diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) from Warje Malwadi, died at Sassoon General Hospital on Friday. This is the fifth suspected GBS death in Pune.

The man died due to respiratory failure with autonomic dysfunction and quadriplegia. He also was suffering from hypertension. According to Pune district health authorities, the man was admitted on January 16. He had severe symptoms and was in the medical intensive care unit and passed away on January 31.

The count of suspected GBS deaths has now gone up to five and the total number of suspected cases is at 149. Three new cases were reported on Saturday. Of the 149 patients, a total of 124 have been diagnosed with GBS. 28 people are currently on ventilator support.

State health authorities said that 29 patients were from Pune Municipal Corporation area, 82 from villages that have been merged in PMC areas, 17 from Pimpri Chinchwad, 13 from Pune rural and 8 are from other districts.

Dr Babita Kamalapurkar, Joint director of health, Maharashtra said that PMC and district health authorities have been instructed to increase surveillance activities.

“However, citizens should not panic. Preventive and control measures are being implemented. Care should be taken to boil water for drinking purposes. Refrain from eating partially cooked meat,” Dr Kamalapurkar said.
