A fire broke out in a boy’s hostel at Savitribai Phule Pune University Wednesday night. No injuries or casualties were reported.

The university’s officiating registrar, Dr Jyoti Bhakare, said the fire was caused by a short circuit in boy’s hostel number 8. She said the university staff extinguished the fire within a short time with the help of firefighting equipment.

This was the second fire incident at the university in just a few days. Last month, the fire brigade extinguished a forest fire near the university premises. Students have expressed their concerns and urged the university administration to take these fire incidents seriously and implement immediate safety measures.

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)’s Shiva Barole said, “What is the university administration doing? The newly appointed chief hostel warden and additional hostel Warden should take responsibility for the incident and take appropriate measures. If there is a threat to the lives of students, all these officials will be held responsible.”
