A 51-year-old resident of Khadakwasla, who along with his family worked as agricultural labourers, was recently admitted to Sahyadri Hospital after suffering from a paralysis attack. However, the patient did not respond to treatment and was declared brain-dead by doctors.
Sharmila Padhye, senior medical social worker at Sahyadri Hospital, counselled the family about organ donation, following which they consented to the same. The eyes, kidneys and liver of the patient was thereafter donated.

The donations helped two patients, who were suffering from kidney and liver ailments, receive a new lease of life. While one patient received the liver and a kidney at Sahyadri Hospital, the eyes and the other kidney was transplanted in another patient at a different hospital.
Padhye said, “To donate organs was a difficult decision. The family has taken a very bold step. Organ donation is a serious subject. However, in India, there is less awareness about it. Therefore, even when a patient requires organs, those are not available.”
