PUNE Rural Police have launched a probe after an electronic voting machine (EVM) unit kept in secure storage at the tehsildar office in Saswad was allegedly stolen. A police guard posted at the facility was suspended for negligence, officials said.

The preliminary probe by the Pune Rural Police has revealed that the theft took place on the night of February 3, at a secure storage facility inside the tehsildar office in Saswad. The facility has the storage of multiple EVM units kept in separate carrying cases. Police have obtained the footage from the security cameras installed on the premises.

“The initial probe suggests that there were multiple EVMs. There were three suspects who have stolen a carrying case containing an EVM unit. Information suggests that this was a demo unit. We will detect the case soon.” said Superintendent of Police for Pune Rural, Pankaj Deshmukh.

Officials said that the building where the theft took place is old. At the time of the incident, a police guard was deployed at the premises for security. The policeman has been suspended pending an inquiry into the charges of negligence, a senior official said.
