Engineering Admissions: Observers appointed at Pune, Kolhapur and Nagpur colleges to check irregularities during admissions

The Directorate of Technical Education regional office Pune has appointed observers to 32 colleges in Pune and Kolhapur to ensure that rules are being followed during these admissions in the institute-level engineering admissions being held from September 8 to 15. The institute-level admissions have commenced after the completion of the four Central Admission Process (CAP) rounds in the Engineering admissions.

In addition to this, the Nagpur regional office also appointed observers to seven colleges for the admission process.

These colleges include College of Engineering, Pune (COEP), Pune Institute of Computer Technology (PICT), Progressive Education Society’s Modern College of Engineering, MIT Academy of Engineering Alandi, Marathwada Mitra Mandal’s College of Engineering, Dr. D.Y. Patil Institute of Technology, Modern Education Society’s Wadia College of Engineering, Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Engineering for Women, and others.

The appointment order issued by interim Joint Director of the Pune regional office stated, “The appointed inspectors should be physically present at the admission process organised during this period in the institution assigned to them and observe whether admission process is as per the procedure mentioned in Rule No. 13 of the Degree and Postgraduate Degree Admission Information Book for the academic year 2025-26 published by the State Common Entrance Examination Cell, Mumbai, and submit a detailed report (along with necessary documents) to this divisional office by 16.09.2025.”

For institute-level admissions, according to the CET website, institutes are supposed to display vacant seats on the institute website and give appropriate advertisements in the newspapers, invite applications from registered candidates, prepare and display merit list on college website and Institute Notice Board, and Carry out/Complete the admission process by following government admission rules (As per Rule 13 of Information Brochure AY 2025-26).

Rule 13 of the Information Brochure specifies rules for ‘Admissions in Institutional Quota and vacant seats after CAP’. These rules include a transparent manner of admissions strictly on Inter-Se-Merit of the candidates, publication of brochure or prospectus of the Institution specifying rules of admission well before the commencement of the process of admission, etc.

On September 4, Kalpeashh Yadav of Shiv Sena UBT’s Yuva Sena had submitted a letter to the CET Cell in Mumbai alleging that rule 13 was being flouted by colleges during institute level admission admissions for the last two years. He claims, “Over the past few years, large-scale financial irregularities have occurred in these rounds, resulting in admissions being granted to the children of the wealthy, while meritorious students face injustice.”
