One heavy spell cracks open resurfaced roads
The issue of poor quality of roads has once again come to the fore after heavy rain lashed the city for five days leading to potholes on various tarred roads across the city.The potholes appeared on various junctions in the old part of the city and suburban areas. The poor condition of roads at Ramanabaug,and near Nilayam theatre and Prabhat theatre,made it difficult for commuters to ride their vehicles.
Similar situations were visible at Ganeshkhind Road as potholes appeared in front of E-Square and below the flyover.
Baner phata,Baner octroi post,Aundh,Karve road,Sinhagad road,Paud road,Katraj – Kondhwa road,Hadapsar,Yerawada,and stretches of the old Mumbai-Pune highway were badly hit by the rain.Though most of the roads were constructed in the last three years,the civic body had recently constructed few of them. Additional City Engineer Vivek Kharwadkar admitted that the potholes have resurfaced on city roads. The number of potholes this year are less compare to that during the previous monsoons. There are many reasons for the potholes, he said,adding that the road department has immediately undertaken work to carry out the maintenance work of roads.The reconstruction of roads after being dug up to lay cables also lead to potholes during the monsoon,Kharwadkar added.
The PMC had been under criticism in the past over poor quality of roads and it had to undertake major work to improve the condition in 2006.
