In a bid to infuse enthusiasm in the city unit of the Congress, especially in the wake of the debacle the party suffered in the Assembly elections in five states, the party has roped in Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan to lift the morale of the party cadre in a rally to be held on Saturday.
The party has to connect to youth but cannot ignore the senior citizens and women who have always stood by the party. There will be special programmes for them, he said. The state party leaders are also expected to tackle the increasing rift within the party. A faction against city MP Suresh Kalmadi, suspended from party, and another supporting him have been taking on each other.
The state unit had to ask all the city Congress leaders to keep distance from Kalmadi to avoid any controversy. The increased number of aspirants for party ticket for Lok Sabha is also likely to add to the partys woes. To get noticed, the aspirants have been organising functions apparently to display their mass support. Legislator Mohan Joshi and Sharad Ranpise are among the many leading contenders. Kalmadi too is not leaving any stone unturned to contest the next Lok Sabha polls on Congress ticket. He has been attending public functions and inaugurating
development works being done from the MP funds.
