Burte gets notice for perjury; court seeks reply by April 22

The court on Monday sought explanation from him by April 22.

Additional sessions judge V K Shewale has issued a notice for perjury to Dr Dileep Burte, the psychiatrist who claimed to have treated Santosh Mane over a period of 14 months. The court on Monday sought explanation from him by April 22.

Appearing as a defence witness,Burte had claimed to have treated Mane for ‘mania’ and had produced his prescription and patient history in the court. The court, however, held that Mane visited Burte’s clinic only once and rest of the record was falsified by Burte to help lawyers defending Mane to prove that he was suffering from a mental illness when he killed nine persons by indiscriminate driving on city roads.

Advocate Manoj Bidkar, hired by Burte to appear on his behalf, said,“The judge issued the notice on April 8 which was received by my client the next day. A couple of days ago,he asked me to appear on his behalf. The notice has been issued under Sections 191,192 and 193 of the Indian Penal Code. I appeared in the court today and sought an extension for providing an explanation. The court granted us time till April 22,” said Bidkar.
