NCP MP Supriya Sule on Monday downplayed the speculations that Sunetra Pawar, wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, might contest from Baramati Lok Sabha seat, saying ”such decisions should be welcomed with all strength.”
When asked about the possibility of Sunetra Pawar contesting from Baramati seat, Sule said, “I believe in democracy. Somebody will contest against me. Therefore, we should welcome such decisions with all strength.” The NCP leader made this statement while speaking to reporters while touring her home constituency Baramati.
Without taking the name of Sunetra Pawar, who is her sister-in-law, Sule said, “In Delhi, entire country knows how democracy was crushed….Somebody will contest against me and we should honour such developments.”
”BJP contested against me thrice… Even this time, they will field a candidate. Democracy should remain alive,” she said.
Sule, daugther of NCP chief Sharad Pawar, is a three-time MP from Baramati Lok Sabha seat.
Before becoming a Lok Sabha member, she was a Rajya Sabha MP. Ever since Ajit Pawar broke ranks and caused a vertical split in the NCP to join hands with the BJP-Shinde alliance government in Maharashtra, speculations have been rife as to who will be fielded against Sule, who stood in support of her father Sharad Pawar.
While initially, there were talks about Ajit Pawar’s son Parth being fielded against Sule, now Sunetra Pawar’s name has cropped up.
When contacted, a state spokesperson from the NCP said, “There is still a long way to go for the election. Nothing has been decided so far. A decision regarding Baramati seat will be taken by top leaders of the Mahayuti (tri-partite alliance of the Shinde Sena, BJP and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction).”
