With a direct entry into active politics, contesting a fight against sitting NCP (SP) Supriya Sule for the coveted seat of Baramati, NCP candidate Sunetra Ajit Pawar, popularly known as `Sunetra Vehini’, is fighting for a cause to retain the prestige of her husband and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in his tussle with uncle Sharad Pawar to establish supremacy in the constituency and politics. The Indian Express followed her campaign trail as she held a `padyatra’ in Dhankawadi.

Pawar was supposed to start her padyatra at 4:30pm, but it started around 6:30pm from Shri Sadguru Shankar Maharaj Vishramdham in Chaitanyanagar. Pawar began with a puja at the Vishramdham with NCP party workers led by former Pune city mayor Dattatraye Dhankawade, who was also joined by NCP leader Subhash Jagtap.

As soon as Pawar arrived at the location, she was surrounded by women party workers and leaders. She performed the puja and was felicitated and presented with a name plate by her local supporters on which was printed, “Mrs Sunetra Ajitdada Pawar, MP Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency”.

Draped in a chocolate-coloured saree, she began her padyatra as she walked out of the Vishramdham. The local BJP unit took charge of the walk along with NCP workers and leaders.

A huge contingent of BJP workers were brought by former BJP corporator Varsha Tapkir. She was also joined by sitting BJP legislator Bhimrao Tapkir, who represents the area.

The party workers burst crackers a slight distance ahead of the padyatra and showered flowers from the tops of buildings along the lane where the padyatra passed through.

As she began walking, surrounded by a huge crowd which mainly comprised women party workers, she was stopped at a few places by women who did an ‘oukshan’ (a form of blessing on a person and wishing success for a competition or challenge) and wished her good luck for the election. There were slogans raised that “each vote to NCP symbol will be a vote for Prime Minister Narendra Modi” and “Ab ki Baar, Sunetrawahini Pawar” as the padyatra headed towards Daulatnagar.

Sunetra greeted all with folded hands and at times waved to all those peeping from their homes and stood on both sides of the lane. After she walked for around 100 metres, Pawar climbed up on an open jeep, where she was accompanied by BJP legislator Bhimrao Tapkir and former corporator Varsha Tapkir among other known faces.

Firecrackers were lit and another ‘oukshan’ done as her padyatra entered another locality, moving through narrow lanes. Youths walked ahead of her jeep as the vehicle made its way through.

She was then joined by BJP spokesperson Shaina N C, who climbed the jeep to campaign for the `Mahayuti’ candidate. Pawar’s padyatra moved on to Shivanjali chowk and Nityanand society.

“Vote for me by pressing the Clock symbol button on voting day. Vote for me with a large victory margin,” Pawar said as she accepted citizens’ wishes for her victory.

On reaching the gates of housing societies, including Rakshalekha society, Pawar assured residents she would work to resolve their public issues and they should stand by her during elections. As she spoke to the people, she sat beside the driver’s seat of the jeep. She was felicitated with the Puneri pagdi at one of these places. “We have to win the lok sabha election to make Narendra Modi the prime minister of the country for the third time,” Pawar said as she added that he was the most popular leader in the world.

She said the development done during the last two terms of the Modi government changed the face of the country and ensured the welfare of everyone in society.

The gathering that followed her continued to raise slogans in support of her and carried a placard of their respective leaders as well as flags of alliance parties. She was later joined by NCP leaders Roopali Patil Thombare, Appa Renuse, Sushant Dhamdhere and Santosh Pharande.
