Three teenagers died after being hit by a train on the railway track at Gopalpatti in the Manjari Budruk area of Pune city Sunday night.
The police have identified the deceased as Prathamesh Nitin Tinde, 18, of Kalepadal, Tanmay Mahendra Tupe, 18, and Tushar Shinde, 19, both residents of Gopalpatti.
They said the Pune–Daund Demu local train, which left Pune railway station around 8.15 pm, ran over the three youngsters around 8.30 pm. They added that there was no CCTV camera around the spot where the accident occurred, and that they are looking for anyone present there.
After receiving the information, teams from the Hadapsar Police Station, Pune city, and the Government Railway Police (GRP) rushed to the spot for investigation.
“A probe is underway to determine the cause of the deaths. It was dark when the accident took place, and so far, we have not come across any eyewitnesses who were at the spot when the youngsters died. Why the deceased youngsters went on the railway track is being investigated,” said Sanjay Mogale, Senior Inspector, Hadapsar Police Station.
Mogale said their bodies were taken to a hospital for a postmortem examination.
The police said the family members of the deceased were informed about the accident.
They said that, as per the legal procedure, an accidental death report will be filed after the post-mortem examination, and a probe will be conducted to know the sequence of events leading to the death of the three youngsters.
