TWO persons were injured and five vehicles were vandalised in stone pelting near Sangamner town of Ahmednagar minutes after a rally organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj, an umbrella organisation of several Hindutva outfits.
The incident took place around 12.30 pm on Tuesday in Samnapur village in Sangamner Taluka of Ahmednagar. Earlier on Tuesday morning a rally ‘Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha’ was organised by Sakal Hindu Samaj in Sangamner town.
“The rally concluded by around 12 pm. Around 12.30 pm, some people who participated in the rally were passing from Samnapur village when stone pelting was reported. Two persons have been injured and five vehicles have been damaged. The process is on to register cases in this regard.” said an officer from Ahmednagar district police.
Police said that provisions pertaining to rioting and causing hurt will be invoked among other sections of the Indian Penal Code. Confirming that two were injured and five vehicles were damaged, Ahmednagar Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ola said, “We have launched a probe into this incident. The law and order situation is under control.”
This incident in Sangamner comes less than two days after an offence was registered against four persons for allegedly displaying a poster of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb accompanied by objectionable slogans.
The incident was reported during a Urs procession of Dam Bara Hazari Baba durgah in Fakirwada area of Ahmednagar around 9.15 pm on June 4.
Police have booked four persons who have been identified and some others on the charges under IPC pertaining to words to wound religious feelings among others, an officer from Bhingarcamp police station said.
In a separate incident, officials from Kolhapur district police are probe a social media status message showing an image of 18th century Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan accompanied by the same objectionable comment used with Aurangzeb poster in Ahmednagar incident.
The violent incident in Ahmednagar on Tuesday is yet another in a series of cases of violence with communal angle that have taken place in the district.
In the second week of May, violent communal clashes were reported in Shevgaon town of Ahmednagar in which multiple police and home guard personnel and civilians were injured on the sidelines of procession taken out to mark the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
In the first week of April, clashes between two religious communities were reported in Ahmednagar city following a petty dispute between two local groups in Warulwadi area of Ahmednagar. The clashes had triggered further violence in two more localities of the city. Five persons were injured and three vehicles were damaged.
