A worker lost his life while cleaning a sewer pipeline at Sassoon Docks in Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) Tuesday. “Three workers were cleaning the sewer pipeline when gas emitted in the chamber. They fell unconscious and were rushed to St George Hospital. However, one of the workers lost his life,” said DCP Manoj Kumar Sharma.

An FIR has been registered against the contractor under Section 304 (A).

Meanwhile, locals alleged that the death was due to negligence on part of the contractor during the cleaning activity.  “An art festival has been planned at the Sassoon Docks next month, and since foreigners are expected they are cleaning the area. However, no safety equipment like masks, gloves or coat were provided to the workers. While crores of rupees are sanctioned by the government for MbPT development, it is not being used to provide well equipped machinery,” alleged Krishna Pavle, a Shiv Sena coordinator who runs a fishing business at Sassoon Docks.

No MbPT spokesperson was available for comment.
