To ensure the safety of women commuters, the transport department floated tenders for women-only fleet taxis Wednesday. While women-only taxis are offered by a few radio cab services, most of them operate in the airport area, thereby limiting options for regular office-goers to commute in cabs driven only women.
To provide a safe travel to women commuters, the transport department is inviting tenders for women-only cabs, said an official release from the department.

As per the specifications, the cab will be air-conditioned and fitted with electronic printer and with GPS/GPRS to enable tracking of the vehicle. The cab will also have to indicate Womens Taxi on top with illumination from the front and rear for visibility at night. A separate colour scheme will also be introduced so that commuters can distinguish these taxis from the regular ones.
The transport department has reportedly also lowered security deposit to attract more parties in bidding for the fleet cab service.
As per the tender specifications, booking counters for such taxis can be opened at airports, railway stations, hotel, malls and residential and commercial complexes.
Of the 7844 permits for fleet taxis, the transport body is looking at giving a minimum of 100 or a maximum of 1,000 permits for women-only cabs. The cabs are likely to begin operating later this year.
Presently,Priyardarshini and Virra cabs offer women-only cabs to commuters. However, with less than a 100 such cabs, majority of women commuters have to book regular fleet taxis.
