A 28-year-old woman was arrested on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust after she allegedly duped a computer dealer of Rs 25 lakh. The accused,Anita Shukla, pretended to start a business process outsourcing unit in Borivali and conned the computer dealer into renting her 109 computers.
Senior Police Inspector Bhagwan Chate from the Borivali police station said,Anita Shukla had approached Vohra in July 2008 and had told him that she needed 109 computers worth Rs 25 lakh to start her own business process outsourcing (BPO) office in Borivali. After entering into an agreement in August 2008,the computers were delivered to her for an overall rent of Rs 2.18 lakh per month.
Shukla gave Vohra post dated cheques of Rs 15 lakh which were dishonoured. After Vohra brought this to her notice,Shukla paid him a sum of Rs 3 lakh in cash and promised to pay the rest later. In March 2010,Shukla shifted her office to Poisar in Kandivali and stopped paying Vohra. She even started ignoring his calls. After tracing her,Vohra approached the police in December 2010 with a written application stating the sequence of events, said Chate.
Following preliminary enquiries, the police registered a case of criminal breach of trust and cheating on January 17 and arrested Shukla on Monday. Shukla was produced in court and was remanded to police custody till February 2. We have recovered a sum of Rs 10 lakh from her. We are now tracing the computers which she claims are in the possession of her former husband, one Sandeep Shukla. We also found out that Shukla has got several cases registered against her with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for duping other people in the past, said Chate.
