Among the casualties was a 53-year old woman, Sandhya Dhore, who drowned in her room. Flood water entered the house of Sandhya and her mother Sayabai Dhore (72) in Surendragadh, leading to relatives managing to rescue the latter while the former was left behind as she could not be moved from her bed, PTI quoted an official as saying. “Sandhya Dhore drowned after the water level in the room increased. A rescue team found her body this morning,” he said.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Sunday morning took stock of the situation and visited homes of the affected families in Vidarbha’s largest city. “As many as 10,000 homes have been affected. Mud has entered houses. The administration is providing medicines and help in cleaning up flood-affected areas. The level of damage is serious. The amount of rainfall was higher than carrying capacity of the area,” he told reporters.

Fadnavis also visited areas in the vicinity of Ambazari Lake — the city’s largest waterbody — which breached its boundaries last night following heavy rains. “The protective wall and others structures of Nag river will have to be rebuilt. The state government will also plan some infrastructure to minimise the damage when Ambazari Lake overflows,” he said. Further, he also announced Rs 4 lakh as compensation for the kin of each of the deceased.

On Saturday, the weather department had issued an orange alert in the district for the next 24 hours. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) continue to remain deployed to rescue stranded people from low-lying areas. Fadnavis had earlier said that an Army team was “kept ready for any emergency”.

Fadnavis and Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari also held a review meeting late Saturday night to take stock of the situation at the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, following which the deputy CM announced a series of compensation for those affected by the flood. Fadnavis has announced an emergency assistance of Rs 10,000 each for the flood victims.

Compensation upto Rs 5 lakh would be given to those who have sustained damages to their shops, and Rs 10,000 to those who run tapris (small roadside establishments).
