Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said Wednesday there is a definite design at work behind people flashing posters of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb and Opposition leaders making public statements about the possibility of riots breaking out in the state.
The remarks by Fadnavis came after a video of a procession Sunday went viral where a man can be seen holding a poster of Aurangzeb in Ahmednagar’s Mukundnagar area.
Addressing reporters in Navi Mumbai, Fadnavis said the issue will be thoroughly probed by the police to ascertain who is the mastermind and what are their objectives. Fadnavis said, “First, some leaders from the Opposition make public statements about the possibility of riots in the state. Then, within a couple of days, individuals waiving posters of Aurangzeb are seen during a public procession. To presume it is sheer coincidence would be naive. I don’t think all this has happened by chance. There is a definite plot with a certain purpose”.
“Who is behind it? What are their plans? All these will be investigated in depth. The question is why individuals belonging to a certain community are suddenly expressing support for Aurangzeb. Why would they do that?” asked Fadnavis.
The deputy CM, who also holds the home portfolio, said the law and order situation in Maharashtra will not be compromised at any cost. “All those behind the devious design will be dealt with firmly.”
“Maharashtra will not allow the glorification of Aurangzeb at any cost. This is a state which has always worshipped and revered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. We follow the footsteps of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar and Mahatma Jyotiba Phule,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Ahmednagar police have said they have filed a case against four people and arrested two after posters of Aurangzeb were shown during the procession in the town.
