Fire breaks out at fertilizer godown in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi, none hurt

“The items stored there were highly flammable; therefore, it didn’t take much time for the flames to spread,” said a fire officer.

The fire had spread to five adjoining warehouses – one of which was storing electronic items such as laptops and computer appliances.

“The presence of these items intensified the blaze, and the flames continued to rise,” the officer said.

The local fire department had deployed eight fire engines to the spot, and the blaze is currently under control.

Bhiwandi houses hundreds of warehouses and is regarded as a logistical hub of India as well as western India. These warehouses stores a varied range of products, starting from clothing items to electronic goods. All the popular e-commerce facilities have their individual warehouses in Bhiwandi.

On October 1, a massive fire ravaged the godown of the Indian magazine, Amar Chitra Katha, in Bhiwandi. In July, Maharashtra Industries Minister Uday Samant had proposed making Bhiwandi the largest logistical centre in the country.
