Police on Wednesday arrested a teacher at a Vasai school after a class 6 student, whom she allegedly made to do sit-ups for coming late to school, died.

A police officer said that Mamta Yadav, the teacher, was arrested under the charges of charges of culpable homicide and cruelty to a child.

“She was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody,” the officer from Valiv police station added.

The incident happened on November 8 when a group of students, including the victim Anshika Gaud, were allegedly made to do sit-ups by the teacher as punishment for reaching school late.

Anshika felt unwell later in the day, and died a week later on November 15.

Her parents blamed the teacher and the school for her death following which the school education department had ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Parents of students who were “punished” alleged the teacher asked them to do 100 sit-ups and their wards did over 90 sit-ups.

The students were allowed to join the class later. However, as per her parents, Anshika, who was reportedly suffering from a pre-existing medical condition, was feeling unwell and fell asleep after reaching home.

Later in the day, when her condition worsened and as she had difficulty breathing, she was rushed to a local hospital. When her condition did not improve, she was transferred to Mumbai’s JJ hospital, where she died.

The Vasai school has also come under the scanner for allegedly running classes 9 and 10 despite having approval to run only up to Class 8.

According to local residents, students in this school continue to study up to class 10 and until the inquiry was initiated after Anshika’s death, nobody knew that the school does not have approval to run classes 9 and 10.

“Children study here till Class 10. To appear for board exams they go to a different school,” said a local resident.

Principal of the school Vikas Yadav, however, denied the allegation and said, “We merely run tuition for classes 9 and 10 for our own student and not full-time school.”

When contacted, Secondary Education Officer Ashok Patil said, “We have sent a notice to the school seeking explanation on this.”
