Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urging people of Karnataka to say “Jai Bajrangbali” when they cast their votes in the Assembly elections.

Addressing a rally at Mahad in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, Thackeray said, “The PM has urged people to say ‘Jai Bajrangbali ki jai’ while casting their votes. Does it not tantamount to using religious sentiment in politics?”

“If the BJP has to rely on ‘Bajrangbali’ in elections, where is its Modi pride? What happened to his much-touted 56-inch chest,” Thackeray asked. “It’s time to drive out the BJP as its politics is detrimental for the country’s democracy,” he added.

“The Congress, in its poll manifesto, had said that if voted to power, it would ban the Bajrang Dal for dividing people and spreading communal hatred. Just because the Congress targeted the Bajrang Dal, the BJP has invoked ‘Bajrangbali’. They have become emotive,” Thackeray said.

“Let me ask them that in that case what should the Shiv Sena (UBT) do? The BJP has taken away the ‘Shiv Sena’ name and ‘bow and arrow’ symbol from us and given it to ‘traitors’ (Eknath Shinde faction). The BJP has insulted Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj,” he said.

“Hereafter, I urge Sainiks to raise ‘Jai Shivaji Jai Bhawani’ slogan while casting your votes,” he said.

“The BJP has no right to take any moral ground. Instead, the BJP should change its name to ‘Bhrasta Janata Party. Across the country it has gathered corrupt people. They are intimidating opponents with central agencies. Their tactic is, either you join the BJP or face the ED and CBI. Using coercive methods to get leaders from other parties has been its strategy to retain power,” Thackeray said.

Saying that the BJP was out to finish each and every party, Thackeray said, “Their Hindutva is confined to religious dogmas. Whereas, we have always believed in Hindutva which is founded on patriotism and inclusive. We don’t believe in discrimination based on caste, communities and religion.”
