A 20-year-old woman was gangraped after her husband was tied up in Dahisar (West) on Monday night. MHB police have arrested two persons Sunny Singh,23,and Harish,25 on basis of the victims description and are on the lookout for an accomplice who is absconding.
Police said the incident occurred in the Ganpat Patil slums, where the couple married in 2008 have been living on rent for the past one year.
The husband,a 23-year-old,sells household goods in local trains. The husband said in his police complaint that he was asleep at his home around 11.30 pm when three men, allegedly intoxicated, barged into his house after disconnecting the electricity.
He said they threatened him with a chopper and assaulted him, asking who had dared to rent the room to him. The victim herself suffered an injury on her hand, when she tried to intervene.
I tried to retaliate. My wife also tried to stop them but they assaulted her too. After beating us up,the men dragged me behind a wall partition and tied me there. They took turns to rape my wife while one held a knife to my neck, he said.
Police said the goons had also threatened the victim and her husband that they would kill them if they went to the police. The husband called up the police control room, and a police vehicle reached the vicinity soon. He has claimed that he had tried to raise an alarm but none of the neighbours came to their help.
The victim, who was in a state of shock, told the police that she had seen one of the accused and he had long hair.
Suresh Kilje, senior police inspector, said they arrested Singh on basis of this description and he led them to his accomplice Harish. The police have not revealed the name of the third accused. The two have been arrested for rape, threatening and assault.
The husband has also told the police that the woman had been complaining about three men from their area peeping into their bathroom when she took bath for the past few days.
She had also complained about a man with long hair passing obscene comments when she went to a nearby shop.
She was scared to lodge a police complaint alone and we were planning to do it together on Sunday. However,by then the vulgar comments had stopped,so we thought we will go to the police later.
The police on Tuesday presented the accused before a court, which remanded them in police custody till May 4.
