A speeding truck illegally crossed railway tracks and crashed into a moving train on Friday morning near Bodwad railway station in Maharashtra. A major disaster was averted as the Mumbai-Amravati Express was moving at a slow speed, stated Nagpur Division officials of Central Railways (CR).
No casualties were reported in the accident that occurred at Jalgaon district, they said. The accident, however, has temporarily affected train services in the Mumbai-Howrah railway corridor.
According to initial reports, the wheat-laden truck was dragged a few metres by the Mumbai-Amravati Express after it barged into a closed level crossing. Several train coaches and the truck were damaged under the impact of the collision that occurred around 4.30 am, officials said.
The truck driver fled the scene following the accident. The Railways and police authorities have launched a search operation to trace the vehicle’s owner and determine the reason for the unauthorised entry onto the tracks.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and local police had rushed to the spot and are engaged in clearing the debris, said a source.
According to Central Railway, the following trains may experience delays or rescheduling:
18029 (LTT-SHM)
22141 (PUNE-NGP)
12261 (CSMT-HWH)
11039 (KOP-G)
12655 (ADI-MAS)
Officials have advised passengers fo check updated schedules before travel. Rail authorities have assured that alternative arrangements have been made, and efforts are underway to restore normal operations as soon as possible.
