Ten transgender persons attempted suicide in Mumbai’s Vikhroli early on Sunday and were admitted to a nearby municipal hospital, where nine of them are currently receiving treatment, the police said.
The transgender persons allegedly committed the act after one Krishna Adelkar badmouthed their organisation in connection with a case registered by the police recently, officials said.
A doctor at Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar said that the transgender persons were rushed to the hospital by the police on Sunday afternoon. They are receiving treatment and will be under observation for a few days, the doctor added.
The police are yet to register a First Information Report in connection with the case.
According to the police, Adelkar was a former employee of the organisation and had been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a transgender person in the past. After being released on bail, Adelkar allegedly started speaking ill of transgender persons. The resulting rumours caused mental stress among the transgender persons who then attempted suicide, the police added.
