Traffic cops crack down on weekend revellers

During the six-hour drive,police nabbed 105 rash drivers and registered cases against them under section 279 of the IPC. Police also registered 118 cases of drink driving and 184 cases under the Motor Vehicles Act for traffic violations like riding without helmet or driving without a licence. In addition,1,183 minor traffic offences such as lane cutting and signal jumping were also registered,and cops collected fine amounting to Rs 3,63,600.

Officers said two-wheeler riders usually tend to speed on empty roads post-midnight. “This is the time when most of the accidents occur,” said an officer.

“The violators know that police drives usually end at 2 am. Many people consume alcohol and get behind the wheel after 2 am. We decided to give them a surprise,” said Brijesh Singh,Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

“We will be changing the spots in every drive,” said an officer.

On Saturday,many offenders nabbed by police were from the Western and Eastern Express Highways,and stretches like Bandra Reclamation and Carter Road,where cases of rash driving were the highest.
