A three-year-old girl was found dead while five of her family members were found unconscious and are currently undergoing treatment in Bhayander. Their condition is critical, police said.

The incident occurred on Sunday and Bhayander police are investigating it. “A three-year-old girl was found dead on Sunday while her parents, two elder sisters and uncle were found unconscious in their house in Bhayander,” a police officer said.

Police suspect either food poisoning or gas leak as the possible cause of the tragic incident. “We are suspecting it could be either food poisoning or a cooking gas leak in their house,” a police officer said.

The three-year-old girl was identified as Dipali Maurya. Hospitalised family members include her father Ramesh Maurya (30), mother Nilam (28), sisters Chahat (8) and Anamika (6), and uncle Rajkumar (40). The family lives in Bhayander (West). Ramesh works at a factory that manufactures plastic bottle caps.

The incident came to light on Sunday night when Ramesh’s sister, Rajkumari, who lives in Bhayander (East), tried to contact her brother but received no response. Concerned, she informed her husband, Shivshankar.

Shivshankar, who was returning home from work, decided to check on the family. “He reached Ramesh’s place at around 9:30 pm and knocked on the door several times. But there was no response. He then forcefully opened the door, only to find everyone lying unconscious on a mat and foam frothing from their mouths,” the police officer said.

Shocked, Shivshankar called nearby residents for help. The unconscious family members were rushed to a hospital in Bhayander and the police were informed. Dipali was declared dead while others were found to be critical,” said a senior IPS officer.

Ramesh’s two daughters, Chahat and Anamika, were shifted to JJ Hospital for further treatment. Ramesh, who remains in a critical condition, was shifted to another hospital, said Mira Bhayander Vasai Virar (MBVV) police commissioner Niket Kaushik.

The police have sent Dipali’s viscera and blood samples of the other affected family members to the forensic science laboratory for analysis. “As of now, an accidental death report has been registered. But we have informed officials of the forensic science laboratory and viscera of the deceased and blood samples of the sick people have been collected and sent for analysis. At this stage nothing is clear but we are investigating and trying to figure out the cause behind the incident,” Kaushik said.
