Unidentified allegedly broke into the Ghatkopar house of a jeweller on Tuesday night and stole gold jewellery worth Rs 48 lakh. The police have found CCTV footage of two men entering the apartment complex where the jeweller lives. The footage is,however, not very clear as the men had covered their faces.

According to the police, the complainant Roshanlal Kothari (61) owns a jewellery store in Ghatkopar West. Three of his employees live in an apartment he owns on the first floor of Laxmi Nivas on MG Road.

The police said that between 8.45 pm and 10.45 pm on Tuesday, unidentified individuals broke the lock on the apartment’s front door, and then proceeded to break the lock of a cupboard in which the gold was stored and flee. A case has been registered under Sections 457 (house-breaking) and 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unidentified persons.

“One of the three employees had gone up to the apartment at 8.45 pm on Tuesday to fill water. Minutes after locking the door and returning to the shop, there was a power blackout in the entire locality. Later, when the three men went upstairs, they found the lock on the door was broken and that someone had forcibly entered. They immediately alerted Kothari,” said Rajkumar Kothmire, senior inspector,Ghatkopar police station.

The police later recovered CCTV footage from a camera mounted on the entrance of the apartment building. “The men who are shown entering with a three foot long iron rod, covered their faces, because they knew there was a camera placed there. It means they must have come there before,” he said.

Kothmire added that the electricity blackout also helped he robbers. “Because there was no electricity,we do not have footage of the men exiting the building. Fortunately, because it was so dark inside, they did not spot half a kilo of silver that was stored right next to the gold. Kothari told us that he recently fired an employee. We have put a trace on his phone and will find hm soon,” he said.
