Greater demand for teaching profession: Over 92 percent seats filled in B Ed with girls dominating admissions in Maharashtra

The Bachelor of Education (B Ed) course continues to emerge as a popular choice among professional courses in Maharashtra with over 92 percent of seats getting filled in the academic year 2025-26, showing a steady growth in admissions in the past three years. Meanwhile, girls continue to dominate B Ed admissions for the third consecutive year, indicating a greater demand for teaching profession among them.

As Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell concluded the B Ed admissions, the data shows that out of 36,698 seats available across 483 colleges, admissions are confirmed on 33,877 seats, leaving only 2,821 seats vacant. The data shared by the CET Cell shows that B Ed course has seen an increasing number of admissions in the past three years.

In the academic year 2023-24, there were 469 B Ed colleges offering 34,240 seats. With confirmed admissions on 30,038 seats, the courses witnessed 12 percent vacancy. With increased admissions in the next academic year, despite the growing number of colleges, the course experienced only 9 percent vacancy in the academic year 2024-25. Then the number of colleges had increased to 471 offering a total of 36,433 seats out of which 33,064 seats were taken, recording more than 90 percent admissions. In the academic year 2025-26, this has further increased to over 92 percent confirmed admissions in BEd even as the number of colleges increased to 483 offering 36,698 seats, out of which admissions were confirmed on 33,877 seats.

Commissioner of Maharashtra CET Cell, Dilip Sardesai said, “Increasing number of admissions in B Ed every year shows that there is a growing demand to make a career in the teaching profession. Furthermore, the number of girls taking admission to B Ed is more than boys, which is a continuing trend.”

As per the data shared by the CET Cell, the number of female students had been consistently higher than that of male students for the past three years. In the academic year 2023-24, out of 30,038 confirmed admissions, 22,327 (74.32 per cent) were girls. In the academic year 2024-25, a total of 33,064 admissions were confirmed out of which 24,704 (74.72 per cent) were girls. This year too, girls dominate B Ed admissions, despite a marginal drop in percentage of total admissions. In the academic year 2025-26, 24,756 (73.07 percent) of the total 33,877 admissions are girls.
