A woman commuter was injured after a stone, thrown by unidentified persons suspected to be children, struck her when she was standing on the footboard of a Virar local train on Monday evening.
The stone hit Samiksha Sharma on her forehead and it started bleeding. Sharma was rushed to a hospital in Bhayander by a co-passenger.
This year, nine such cases have been reported with the police.
According to police officials, taking action in such cases is difficult as the culprits are mostly children living near the tracks.
Sharma said,I boarded the ladies compartment from Borivali at 6.27 pm on Monday. As soon as the train left Mira Road,I came forward and stood near the gate to alight at Bhayander. All of sudden,a stone hit my forehead. My co-passengers took me Sneha Hospital in Bhayander and I got four stitches on my forehead.
Senior police inspector Namankit More,GRP,Vasai, said,In this area, one or two cases of stone pelting have been reported in the last six months. The spurt in encroachments near the tracks is the reason behind rise in such cases.
More added,No complaint has been registered in Sharmas case so far. I came to know of the incident today and have spoken to the victim. My staff will go to her residence and will register the complaint.
A police official on the condition of anonymity said,The police are unable to take strict action in such cases as the culprits are mostly children who pelt stones for fun. To keep a check on these incidents, mohalla committees were formed where residents were asked to take control of situation. But since 2008,the incidents have been on a rise.
Earlier this year,Pravin Terse, who resides at Kalyan Adharwadi, was also hit by a stone while travelling on a local to Dombivli.
