The Maharashtra government Wednesday approved the proposal to undertake redevelopment of slums on the land admeasuring 33.15 hectares at Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in suburban Ghatkopar through a joint venture of Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
This will be for the first time that a slum redevelopment project in the city will be undertaken as a joint venture by two government agencies.
As per the government decision, the SRA would undertake biometric survey of the slums; declare slum area under section 3(c); acquire private land, extend permissions for letter of intent, construction permission, maps etc; handover the vacant land to the MMRDA for the redevelopment and take necessary action against the slum dwellers who do not co-operate for the project.
The MMRDA will be finalising the architect and contractors for the project.
It will prepare the feasibility report and detailed planning report of the buildings in the project; provide transit camps or rent to the project affected people; prepare a project report for SRA’s approval and undertake construction work.
“The proposal for sharing the responsibility of SRA for the redevelopment purposes with other government agencies was discussed earlier by the state government,” said an official from the housing department.
In September 2023, the proposal was cleared whereby redevelopment projects were to be undertaken by the SRA as a joint venture with government corporations, authorities and local civic bodies.
“It was observed that the aim of making Mumbai slum-free was not being achieved over the years despite government’s focus on this issue. In a bid to overcome this obstacle, it was suggested that other government bodies can be roped in with the SRA for the redevelopment purposes,” said the official.
