Nagpur police thwarted an unusual attempt to smuggle ganja (marijuana) into the Nagpur Central Jail on Thursday, uncovering a method that relied on concealing the contraband inside a prisoner’s body.

A murder convict, Vaibhav Deshmukh, brought to the district court for a hearing, was allegedly set to return to the Central Jail carrying packets of ganja hidden in his anus. The plan was designed to bypass routine prison security checks and deliver the marijuana directly into the facility.

The operation came to light when Head Constable Sunil Tiwari received a tip-off that three accomplices would arrive at court to hand over the contraband. According to investigators, the modus operandi was to discreetly pass the ganja to the prisoner on court premises, have him conceal it internally after he excused himself to the washroom, and smuggle it into the Central Jail undetected.

Upon Deshmukh’s arrival at court, police identified three suspects loitering nearby: Ravi Vilas Dhande (32), a recently released inmate who had served a seven-year sentence under the MCOCA Act, Anuj Raju Nagpure (26); and a minor. Dhande was found carrying approximately 15 grams of ganja in his pocket, ready for the handover.

Police officials said the prisoner had planned to excuse himself to use the washroom, where he would meet the suppliers and receive the ganja. He intended to hide the packet in his anus, allowing him to smuggle it into the Nagpur Central Jail and retrieve it later.

Asa result of the swift action of District Court police team, the contraband was never able to reach its destination. The Sadar Police have booked the two adult suspects under Section 170 of the BNS.
