Shiv Sena MLA Nilesh Rane on Wednesday alleged that BJP workers were distributing cash to voters in Malvan in Sindhudurg district, ahead of the municipal council elections scheduled for December 2. The BJP denied the allegations.
Rane, a leader of the Eknath Shinde-led Sena, alleged that he conducted a raid at a BJP worker’s house and showcased a bag of cash on social media, claiming that there were 3-4 more bags of money in the house. He stated that the authorities, including election officers and the police, should take custody of the money and investigate the matter.
“This is not limited to one house; there are 8 to 10 more houses involved. We have video evidence of their activities. This is not the way to fight elections,” Rane said during a live broadcast on Instagram.
Rane also claimed that before his visit, some BJP workers tried to interfere with the bag of cash, which he said was part of a wider attempt to influence voters in the run-up to the December 2 election.
The Malvan Municipal Council polls will see the Shiv Sena and BJP contest against each other, highlighting the growing friction between the ruling alliance partners at the local level.
Terming the allegations false, Ravindra Chavan, state BJP president, said that the Sena was irked as the BJP did not ally with it in Malvan. “It is not appropriate to raid the house of these workers who ensured his victory in the Assembly polls. Since the past five-six days, he has gotten to know the ground reality, and hence he is doing all these things,” Chavan said.
The poll results will be declared on December 3.
