Seniors show the way to school

Dindoshi Senior Citizen Welfare Association of Goregaon distributes stationery to children of watchmen, domestic helps and drivers

A group of senior citizens is helping more than 1,000 underpriviledged children in Goregaon pursue studies by distributing notebooks and other material.

Dindoshi Senior Citizen Welfare Association of Goregaon issued a circular last week asking its more than 130 members to contribute money to buy pencils, erasers and other study material for children of watchmen, domestic helps and drivers working for them.

The members include retired businessmen and police officers.

“Education of these children should not stop without stationery and books. Each child was given a dozen notebooks and stationery,” said Shantiprakash Navalgaria, president of the association.

“Many domestic helps and sweepers cannot afford to send their children to school. We are trying to make sure these children get education.

“Municipal school fees are negligible but buying books and uniforms costs a lot. We are trying to cover this aspect,” he said.

Navalgaria owns a factory in Kohinoor Industrial Estate along Goregaon Western Expressway.

Shraddha Yadav,a class six student of Goregaon Municipal School,is a beneficiary.
