A high-level delegation of Shiv Sena (UBT) legislators met Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar on Thursday and submitted a memorandum requesting him to take a decision on the disqualification of 16 MLAs of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena at the earliest. The meeting came two weeks after the Supreme court gave its verdict on the case of disqualification petition.

Earlier last week, the Sena UBT delegation had met Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal and submitted a memorandum to him since Navekar was in London.

“We have requested the speaker to expedite the process and take the decision on the disqualification of 16 MLAs at the earliest. He is a lawyer by profession and we hope that he will take the right decision at the earliest,” Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Ambadas Danve said.

Earlier Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar had said that he has received five petitions for disqualification of 54 MLAs that were filed by both the Shiv Sena (UBT) led by Uddhav Thackeray and Shiv Sena led by Shinde.

Narvekar said that he will have a hearing of every petition and indicated that the process may take time.

The Supreme Court, in its order on May 12 on the political crisis in Maharashtra, had asked the Speaker to decide the disqualification petitions “within a reasonable period”.

Except for Sena MLA Aaditya Thackeray and Rutuja Latke, all other 54MLAs of the undivided Shiv Sena are now facing disqualification petitions. However, despite two weeks of the apex court’s order, the Speaker is yet to issue the notices to the MLAs.

Meanwhile, Narwekar visited New Delhi on Wednesday, where he is said to have had a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.

Narvekar, however, has said that he was not in Delhi for a political meetings.

This was Narvekar’s first visit to Delhi after apex court order. “I usually comes to Delhi for a work related to my constituency and during this visit I meet many people. But it was not political visit. Even if it was my first visit to Delhi after apex court ‘s order (on Maharashtra political crisis), my Delhi visits are routine ones,” Narvekar said.
