The Mumbai crime branch, investigating the murder of former Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Abhishek Ghosalkar (41), on Friday said Mauris Noronha (49) left the Facebook Live moments before it ended and sneaked upstairs to fetch the firearm from his safe, with which he allegedly shot Ghosalkar point blank. The police made the claim after recording witness statements and putting together the sequence of events with the help of footage from CCTV cameras installed at Noronha’s office.
Ghosalkar, son of former Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Vinod Ghosalkar, was shot dead in Borivali in suburban Mumbai on Thursday evening during a social media live, allegedly by his old rival Noronha, who later shot himself fatally.
Ghosalkar and Noronha, a businessman who resides in Borivali, had recently patched up and both were at the live-streaming session in the ground-plus-one office used by Noronha. Prima facie, the police believe Noronha shot Ghosalkar dead over past enmity.
The police said Noronha initially failed to kill himself as he ran out of bullets. “In the footage from the CCTV camera outside his office it can be seen that Noronha is looking at Ghosalkar in disgust. Once Ghosalkar died, Noronha fired a shot at himself. However, the pistol had run out of bullets. He was then seen going back to the first floor where he reloaded the gun and shot himself,” an officer said.
Meanwhile, the crime branch has arrested Amarinder Mishra (40), Noronha’s bodyguard whose firearm was allegedly used by him to kill Ghosalkar and later himself. Mishra had procured the firearm in 2003 from Phulpur in UP on grounds that he was a security guard. He, however, did not register the gun with the Mumbai police and had given it to Noronha for use.
A senior officer said they went through the footage from the CCTV camera outside Noronha’s office, in which no one is seen entering the room who could have handed over the firearm to Noronha. Mishra, in his statement, told the police that he had kept the firearm in the safe around 2.30 pm on Thursday.
“We suspect Noronha got up from the live feed, went to the first floor and got the firearm from the safe,” the senior officer said. As the Facebook Live was about to end, Noronha fired five rounds, four of which hit Ghosalkar. There were three exit wounds meaning one bullet was lodged in Ghosalkar’s body. Soon after the attack, he tried to jump out by breaking the glass. However, he died just outside the office. Nearly 25 seconds later, the video captured the sound of another shot which the police suspect was Noronha firing on himself.
