Senior Congress MLA and former Leader of Opposition Vijay Wadettiwar Saturday alleged that Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik acquired a four-acre land parcel in Mira Bhayandar worth around Rs 200 crore for just Rs 3 crore to set up an educational institute.

Wadettiwar claimed that the land’s actual market value is nearly Rs 400 crore and said the deal reflects a broader pattern of land-related irregularities involving builders, developers and political leaders across major cities.

“You loot Maharashtra and expect us to keep our eyes closed,” Wadettiwar said.

He further asked, “Can a minister procure such land for his own educational institute? If this is permissible, then let this be Maharashtra. We will shut our eyes helplessly. Come and see, this is the current situation under their rule.”

Responding to the allegations, Minister Pratap Sarnaik dismissed the claims, stating that he was unaware of owning any such land. “I came early in the morning to see where this land is that I supposedly bought for Rs 3 crore. I don’t even know where this land is. If it’s worth Rs 200 crore, I should be happy it’s important to inspect such a bargain.”

Sarnaik added, “Yes, I am a state minister. So after such grave allegations, giving clarity to the public is my responsibility.” He said he would respond further after Wadettiwar presents details in a press conference.

“Once he presents his evidence, I will respond. As the former Leader of the Opposition, it is his job to produce proof. Then I will clarify everything.”

Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the government would act only if a formal complaint is submitted.

“Wadettiwar should file a complaint, not merely address the media,” he said.

Bawankule added, “These people spend more time making allegations through the media than actually filing complaints. If a complaint is submitted, we can order an inquiry into it. Look at the recent Pune land case. When the issue was raised, the state government formed a committee and initiated a probe.”
