An eyewitness in the trial against dismissed RPF constable Chetansinh Chaudhary told court that he had seen an RPF man carrying a rifle standing near a bearded man lying in a pool of blood. The witness told the court that he heard the RPF man say that ‘ye 2008 ka badla hai’ (this is revenge for 2008).

Chaudhary is facing trial for allegedly murdering his senior colleague, assistant sub-inspector Tikaram Meena and three Muslim passengers Asghar Ali Abbas, Abdul Kader Bhanpurwala and Syed Saifuddin on the Jaipur-Mumbai passenger train on July 31, 2023. The Government Railway Police (GRP) had alleged that Chaudhary had killed Abbas and was seen by witnesses standing near his body, lying in a pool of blood.

On Monday, a 32-year-old who deposed as the witness, told court that he was returning to Mumbai from his native place in July 2023, and had boarded S6 coach of the Jaipur-Mumbai train on July 30, 2023. He told the court that he had dinner and went to sleep around 12.30am. He told the court that around 5.30am, he heard a loud noise which woke him up. “I saw a bearded person lying in a pool of blood and one RPF person was standing with a rifle,” he told the court. He said that he got scared, collected his luggage and ran towards the other side of the coach. “I heard the RPF policeman saying ‘yeh 2008 ka badla hai. All the passengers had left the coach. Then, I saw the RPF man go towards the S5 coach and thereafter he alighted from the train,” the witness told the court during his examination-in-chief by additional public prosecutor, Sudhir Sapkale. The reference to 2008 was purported to be about the November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, by ten Pakistani terrorists.

The police allege that after shooting his senior colleague over wanting to alight as he was not feeling well, Chaudhary had identified three other passengers, and shot them, before a passenger pulled the chain and the train stopped, and he fled, and was arrested by other policemen.

During the cross-examination by Chaudhary’s lawyer Jaywant Singh, the witness denied that his deposition was false. The witness was not made to undergo the procedure to identify Chaudhary, who was produced before the court via video-conference.
