Rooftop travel injures three teenagers

Three teenaged boys travelling on the roof of a train were injured on Friday after they came in contact with high-voltage overhead wires.

Three teenaged boys travelling on the roof of a train were injured on Friday after they came in contact with high-voltage overhead wires. One of the injured had not regained consciousness on Saturday when reports last came in. Bandra government railway police said two of them have been admitted to Masina Hospital. There were four of them, all friends, travelling on the roof. One of them who suffered minor injuries fled, apparently fearing action.

Police said the four boys from Dongri were going to Mira Road to meet a friend and boarded a Virar-bound fast train from Mumbai Central around 9pm. The train being crowded, the four decided to climb on the roof. Police said,“on reaching platform number 4 at Bandra station, the boys came in contact with 25,000 volt overhead wires”.

“A lot of people travel rooftop without realising the hazards. The boys probably tried to bend their bodies to escape but even close proximity to the wires can be dangerous,” said Vijay Gopavkar, senior inspector of Bandra railway police.

On hearing the boys scream, passengers informed railway police and the three were rushed to Bhaba Hospital. Later, the families shifted them to Masina Hospital. One of the injured is 16 years old,and has sustained 60 per cent burns, the other two are 17 years old. Both have sustained 70 percent burns.

All the boys are residents of Suleiman building in Dongri. “We have not registered any case yet. We have not recorded their statements yet as they are not in a condition to speak,” said Gopavkar.
