This Raksha Bandhan, brother’s liver donation gives sister a lease of life at Mulund hospital

Humera’s health journey has been fraught with challenges. The family first confronted Wilson’s Disease, a rare genetic disorder that leads to toxic copper accumulation in organs, in 2017 when elder brother Owais was diagnosed. Routine screening of his siblings revealed that Humera, too, was suffering from the same disorder. Although she began chelation therapy in 2018, her condition progressively worsened. By early 2025, she exhibited severe symptoms, including advanced liver cirrhosis, jaundice, and abdominal swelling, indicating life-threatening complications.

On medical advice, the family sought expert consultation with Dr Vikram Raut, Director and Chief Surgeon at Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery at Fortis Hospital. Dr Raut and his team determined that Humera’s only chance for recovery was a liver transplant. After a thorough evaluation, her brother Anas was identified as a perfect donor match.

Reflecting on his decision to donate, Anas said, “She’s my sister, and I didn’t have to think twice about saving her”. He added, “I was already ready”, when it was confirmed he was a match. His family and friends supported his instinctive choice and were proud of his commitment and courage.

Dr Vikram Raut explained, “Despite beginning chelation treatment in 2018, Humera’s condition worsened, and the only option available was liver transplantation. We used the left lobe of her brother’s liver for the transplant.” He emphasised that successful outcomes like Humera’s highlight the importance of timely medical intervention and family support.

Raksha Bandhan, observed by millions across India, traditionally celebrates the protective bond between siblings. For the Pathan family, the festival now marks a personal story of sacrifice, resilience, and hope. With her life restored, Humera looks forward to returning to a semblance of normalcy with her husband, while Anas is eager to resume duties at his garment store.
