Isolated pockets of Mumbai experienced light drizzle, accompanied by thunderstorms, during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. While the intensity of the rainfall was very light, officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the quantity was also below the measurable limit.
Senior IMD officials said the rain was the result of the interaction of dry and wet wind. They added that in the next three to four days, isolated parts of Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra can see rainfall.
“Since the last few days, the state has been experiencing higher day temperatures, which has heated the land, causing an incursion of moisture… leading to light drizzle,” said an IMD official.
“There’s a possibility of rain this week. Also, between March 16 and 17, Mumbai may see rain. Meanwhile, parts of interior Maharashtra, like Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar and Aurangabad may experience hailstorm along with thunderstorm and lightning,” the official added.
On Tuesday, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 36.8 degree Celsius while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 35.4 degrees Celsius, both four degrees above normal.
The city also recorded above normal minimum temperature.
