A railway clerk from Kalyan was duped by a man who contacted her and claimed that her son, an MBBS student, was caught in a rape case and sought money from her to ‘save’ him, Government Railway Police officials in Mumbai said. The woman sent Rs 48,000 to the man, only to realise later that she had been cheated.
On Monday morning, at around 10.44 am, the woman was at her workplace at Shahad railway station in Thane district when she received a data call. Though the caller did not identify himself properly, his display photo was that of police officials. He told the complainant that her son has got stuck in a rape case in Pune.
“Her son is studying MBBS in Nanded and the caller told her that he was caught in a rape case in Pune. She was so panicky that she did not even think that her son was in Nanded and not in Pune. Fraudsters take advantage of this and make money,” Senior Inspector Pandharinath Kande of Kalyan GRP said.
“Under the pretext of not taking any action and getting her son out of the case, he asked the woman to send money via UPI on a number. The woman was so scared that she immediately transferred Rs 48,000,” a police officer said.
When the woman called her son after transferring the money, she realised that it was a con.
On her complaint, the police on Monday registered a case under sections 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and 66D (cheating by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act.
