Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Thursday raised the issue of non-implementation of Dr Madhav Gadgil Committee report on Western Ghats, in view of the landslide incident in Irshalwadi in Raigad district that led to the loss of over 10 lives.

“During Dr Manmohan Singh’s government, environment minister Jairam Ramesh formed the Madhav Gadgil Committee, the report of which should have been implemented… but it was not done. Government forms a committee of experts, crores of rupees are spent on it but it is not implemented. We should take some lessons from incidents like Irshalwadi. But it is unfortunate that it is not happening,” said Patole on his visit to the Irshalwadi accident site.

Leader of Opposition in legislative council Ambadas Danve visited the site and Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray visited the Irshalwadi accident site. “Such incidents are increasing across the country and that’s why the climate action plan is a necessity. The extreme climate conditions need to be tackled and concrete steps must be taken,” Thackeray said.

“The incident is very unfortunate and heartbreaking. After such incidents, the government wakes up and announces remedial measures but why some measures are not taken to prevent such incidents,” he said, adding that such accidents have happened in Konkan before but no lesson seems to have been taken.

Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Jitendra Awhad reminded the government of the need to build special houses in hilly villages. “MHADA built 361 houses at Malin that are weather-proof. The government needs to undertake similar rehabilitation schemes in villages in hilly areas,” said Awhad, adding that this is required to avoid repetition of such tragedies every year.
