On a day when a news report by Financial Times and The Guardian, based on documents accessed by Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), levelled fresh allegations of stock manipulation against the Adani Group, opposition Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “uncomfortable” silence and denial to order Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the matter, claiming India’s “reputation” was at stake.
Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of the third meeting of opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), Gandhi said, “It seems like an institutional network whereby foreign money is being pumped into buying ports, airports and infrastructure projects of India. Why is Prime Minister Narendra Modi quiet about this? Why is there no probe? Why are agencies like CBI and ED not probing into this.”
When asked about the special parliament session convened in September by the union government, Gandhi said, “It is an indicator of little panic. Just like when I raised the issue in Lok Sabha, they suspended my membership. Whenever one raises Adani matter, the PM becomes uncomfortable.”
“The G-20 summit is the flavour of the season. The people of these 20 countries are witnessing the G-20 summit. The reputation of India is at stake. India no longer has a level playing field. All contracts and projects are given to one person. Only that person is buying all the assets of the country. It is clear that one person has done something wrong,” said Gandhi, reiterating the demand of JPC probe into the alleged scam.
He said that at the time of G-20, India was trying to show the world and businesses that it is a level playing field without corruption. “All those countries are watching how billion dollars are going out. This is damaging the image of India.”
Gandhi, who began his press conference by displaying the photocopies of international newspaper reports published on Adani group’s alleged manipulation of stocks, said that he has few questions that need to be answered.
“There are serious questions raised here. First, whose money is involved here? Is it of Adani or someone else? There are two foreign nationals, namely Chang Chang Ling who is a Chinese national and Nassser Ali Shaban Ahli who are close associates of Gautam Adani’s brother Vinod Adani, who is a main player here. Second question is, why were these two foreign nationals allowed to play with India’s infrastructure,” he asked.
Gandhi said that there was an investigation into this by the SEBI and clean chit was given. “The man who gave clean chit is now a director at NDTV owned by Adani. It proves that no investigation took place. It also means that the PM did not want investigation,” said Gandhi.
